Fences built from the ground up
Pocklington sits east of York at the foot of the Wolds, and we have been fitting fences there for years. Most jobs start the same way: a fence that has begun to lean, a boundary that needs more privacy, or panels that came down in the last storm. What changes from one garden to the next is the ground, and that is where we start.
Each post hole is dug out and filled with concrete. Our usual build pairs concrete posts with a concrete gravel board at the base, so no timber touches the earth and the bottom edge cannot rot. If wooden posts look better in your garden, they are pressure-treated and bedded to the same depth.
Clearing comes first. The old panels and posts are taken down, any lump of old concrete sitting on the new line is dug out, and the lot leaves on our van, so there is no heap of rotten timber waiting for you behind the shed.

New fence, gate and patio on New Street
On New Street, a back garden that had seen better days was turned round in one booking. The worn-out boundary was replaced with a more private fence, a gate was built in the same timber, and an Indian stone patio was laid.
That is typical of Pocklington work. Someone calls about the fence, and once we are on site with the materials and tools, adding the gate and the paving costs less in time and upheaval than bringing in three separate trades.

Do I need planning permission for a new fence in Pocklington?
Not for most back gardens. Fences up to two metres tall are normally allowed without an application, dropping to one metre beside a road that carries traffic.
